" A Small History of the Eastside and ZerNona "

A Small History of the Eastside by San Antonio artist Ronney Stevens traces the city’s Eastside history throughout the 20th-century. Emblems of education bookmark the composition. On the left, the façade of Cuney Elementary is depicted as one of the oldest elementary schools on the Eastside. To the right, the newest building at St. Philip’s College shines as a symbol of the future. In the 1950s and 1960s, ZerNona Black and her husband Reverend Claude Black, along with other community members, staged peaceful civil rights protests. The results led to the integration of lunch counters at local motels, Joske’s Department Store, theaters, and other public spaces. The mural shows the Tower of the Americas and River Walk as icons of the Eastside of San Antonio. Lastly, the mural includes landmarks like the Cameo Theatre and Tucker’s Lounge.
